Swimming Pool FAQs
We want a swimming pool but where do we start?
Deciding what style, shape and features you would like in your swimming pool is the first step, so let us help you get started – check out our Inspiration & Planning, Our Creations and Inspiring Features pages for ideas and helpful tips. We suggest first to think about how you want to enjoy the pool or hot tub throughout the year, then think about what features will enhance how you would like to use it. After all, this is an investment in your lifestyle. If you are still not sure, give us a call and we would be happy to answer your questions.
What’s the difference between concrete/shotcrete swimming pool and a vinyl pool?
A concrete swimming pool (otherwise known as shotcrete or gunite) has a special type of concrete which is pneumatically sprayed with compressed air onto a rebar steel cage which is backed by formwork. This is a very durable swimming pool investment. The finish of a concrete swimming pool is a coating of plaster which can come in traditional white or a variety of colours, quartz and/or pebble can be added with a tile band at the water line. Alternatively, an all-tile finish is very popular too. A vinyl pool consists of galvanized vertical steel walls which in turn have a vinyl liner draped off them. At ALKA POOL, we build concrete in-ground swimming pools because we know they last the test of time and the versatility concrete gives in custom designs.
How long does it take to build a concrete swimming pool?
The length of time a pool or whirlpool takes to build depends on each site. It would be wise to allow 8-12 weeks minimum for the swimming pool. However, timing will depend upon many things such as; permits, city and engineering requirements, complexity of design and whether the swimming pool is in conjunction with other things, like a new home construction, renovation or other landscaping which can extend the build time.
How much does a concrete swimming pool cost?
Each ALKA POOL poolscape is custom and therefore, it is difficult to give accurate numbers. The best way to determine a budget is to give some thought to size, depth and shape of pool and patio preferences. Then give us a call. We’ll ask some additional questions like a description of the site, access for excavation and pool placement, which municipality you’re planning to build in, and most importantly how you plan to enjoy your pool throughout the year. Our sales staff will be able to give you a budget number, or if you are ready, we can make an appointment to review your poolscape needs in detail.
What should I look for in a builder?
Look for a builder that has years of experience in the type of pool construction you desire. The swimming pool builder you ultimately choose should bring you the latest in available products, building techniques and services. They should be an active member of associations which promote good ethics, quality, safety and continuing education. At ALKA POOL we have over 60 years of experience in building concrete pools, whirlpools and water features. We have been a leader in bringing the latest innovations the pool industry has to offer throughout our long history.
Here’s a quick checklist to help you find a pool builder. A professional pool builder should;
- Carry current WCB in good standing
- Carry valid general liability insurance
- Be in business for many years with a proven track record and be able to provide you with a reference list of both recent and older projects
- Present their products and services fairly and on the basis of their merits without attacking competitive products and services
- Have a strong support network like a Guild or association where they can continually improve and keep up with the latest technologies
- Be involved in industry education programs, technical seminars and trade shows where new ideas and products are displayed
How do I maintain my swimming pool?
As a final step of swimming pool construction, we commission your pool and essentially ‘turn over the keys’ with a thorough walkthrough and review of your swimming pool operation including any special features, equipment, safety, chemical balance, maintenance, and provide you with operating manuals and warranties. We want to make sure you are confident with the operation of your new swimming pool for years of enjoyment.
